Hello, and Welcome to Focus Tutoring!

I am Alexis Engles, dedicated Educator, Mother of three, and founder of Focus Tutoring.  I have a B.A. in Spanish and Latin American Studies and a Masters in Teaching.  In 2005, Walker Middle School in Salem, Oregon hired me to start the first Secondary Dual Language School in the state of Oregon.  While there for 4 years, I taught Language Arts, Social Studies, ESL, ELL, and Bilingual Education (Dual Language).   In 2010, I left the classroom to stay home with my children, and then began homeschooling in 2015.  This led to a passion for teaching and tutoring from home and has provided a diverse background in educational instruction.

I tutor K-12, multiple subjects, and work with homeschool students, students enrolled in online public school, and those attending traditional school environments. In addition, I work with children with disabilities. I have recently devoted extra time to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD.

I am fully engaged in working with my students.  In addition to academic growth, I greatly value my relationship my with my students and their families.  I teach my students study skills and self-advocacy skills.  I believe in them and cheer for them.  My greatest joy is to see them believe in themselves.  When they make mistakes or exhibit behavioral challenges, I respond with compassion, understanding, forgiveness and acceptance.  Forgiveness and acceptance are powerful tools that unlock a light within.  I love helping my students navigate the world around them.

I look forward to getting to know you and your child in this amazing journey of learning.
